Roadworks finds new species of whale

You wouldn’t usually expect to find a new species of whale by digging up old tarmac. That is, however, exactly what has happened in California’s Laguna Canyon, where a road project has unearthed several species of toothed baleen whales.

The new species are, in fact, very old.

Paleontologists have established that the whales lived between 19 and 17 million years ago.
